Get to Know Your First Freediving Equipment as a Beginner

Are you looking to get into freediving? ‘Which freediving equipment should I get first?’ you may ask.

This is the most complete essential freediving equipment guide for beginners. We rank the priority of the equipment as you advance into your freediving lifestyle, so you can make step by step investment according to your needs.

Freediving Mask and snorkel

The most intimate and important piece of the equipment, we recommend you to get one before taking your freediving course. It’s  every freediver’s right of passage to find ‘The One’ The freediving mask that fits their face the best, and it might take a few trial and error, as the aim is to achieve maximum comfort in the water.

How to choose ?

We strongly suggest you to visit a dive shop to try them on, ask for freediving low volume mask. The lens should be clear and not reflecting, place them on your face without wearing the straps, take a inhale, if the mask sticks to your face without falling, and try to see if you can pinch your nose to equalize properly through the mask, if the above boxes all ticked, it means that it suits you!

On the other hand, to choose a snorkel is relatively easy, scan through the options in the shop and find the simplest one, without fancy valve or stretchy ability, it’s the best one for freediving. Try on a couple variations, and notice the subtle difference of each one and choose carefully.

Freediving Long Fins & Fins Bag

Now, you have made a deal with the ocean that you will come back often. It’s time to have your own freediving fins and fin bag. They are tickets to freedom and confidence in water, it allows you to get further out from the shore, dive deeper to swim with the turtles gracefully.

How to choose ?

Freediving long fins comes in plastic, fiberglass and carbon materials. You might have worn the plastic ones during your freediving course, it’s the cheapest and most unbreakable material for freediving newbies with their clumsiness.

But if you are getting your own equipment, it’s also time to learn how to take care of your fins, fiberglass is a good option for freediving beginners since it’s a more affordable option compared to carbon.

Having a good freediving equipment bag is often overlooked. It’s home to your equipment and it shows how a freediver treats them. And if you plan to go on freediving adventures, having an equipment bag that is easy to carry is also crucial. Check out our bestselling freediving bags

Freediving Wetsuit & Weight Belt

Comfort, relaxation, it’s like the blanket covering you for the sound sleep you need. And if you are yearning for depth of the ocean, having a wetsuit and weight belt can ensure your maximum relaxation in comfortable temperature.

Personally, I didn’t get a wetsuit until later on in my freediving career since I dive in tropical waters.

How to Choose ?

For beginners, many opt for a surf or scuba wetsuit, they usually come in neoprene material and standard in sizes. But if you are someone who gets cold easily in water, or reading this article from colder waters, then you might want to look into getting a customized freediving two piece wetsuit – it seals better and you can choose the material in open cell which keeps the heat better.

Wetsuit and water temperature:

28°C and warmer: 1-1.5mm

24-28°C: 3mm

18-24°C: 5mm

16-17°C and colder: 7mm

Unlike scuba diving weight belt, freediving weight belt should be stretchy with quick release, as you need to make sure the belt sits tightly on your hips, and not fall loose when your body is being squeezed smaller with the water pressure.

Dive Watch

Your best friend if you are training to go deeper, to keep track of the dive time and depth to improve accordingly is important. I mean, you need a dive watch to take a picture with your new PB, no picture no proof.

How to Choose ?

Sunnto (link) and and Atmos(link) are very good brands, the function is basic but more than enough to get you very far, and the pricing is affordable as well.

Buoy

Now you are getting serious in freediving, establishing social status among your freediving community, it’s like the friend who has a nice rooftop to host a party at. Jokes aside, having your own buoy set up can be such a budget-friendly option if you are training often; and it’s also a very important safety device in spearfishing and drift dive.

How to Choose?

A good quality buoy is non negotiable, it holds your bottom weight, your deep dives and comfortable space to breath up. Make sure the material is strong, and has handles for you to transfer easily. And we are not being humble here, because our Fish On Stilts buoy is literally the best, it’s sturdy, you can wear it like a backpack, and there are 2 different sizes according to your training target.
